Japan/Hokkaido: Cape Soya
Cape Soya is the northernmost point of Japan. La Perouse straight separates Japan from the Russian Sakhalin just 43km away, and Sakhalin is visible in a distance (I was just there less then a week ago!). There is a whole bunch of monuments and attractions all jam-packed together here – Monument of the Northernmost Point, Peace Monument (for the US submarine the Japanese sank in WWII and 5 Japanese fishing boats that submarine sank before), Cape Soya Lighthouse, Tower of Prayer (for Korean Airlines 007 shot down in 1983 by USSR), and several others.
