Japan/Hokkaido: Hakodate
Hakodate is he most interesting and impressive town on Hokkaido, easily blown away any competition. Hakodate has it all – it’s right on the water, a massive Mount Hakodate towers above town and a cable car takes you up their for some phenomenal panoramic views of the entire peninsula. Hakodate was Japan’s first city to open to international trade and as such it boasts many historic districts scattered over picturesque hills. There is a neighborhood called Motomachi that has 4 religious buildings packed into one block – a Russian Orthodox Church, a Japanese Buddhist temple, a Roman Catholic Church, and an Anglican St John Church – all four facing each other!
