Japan/Honshu: Arashiyama – Tenryuji Temple

Tenryuji Temple next to the Bamboo Groove in Arashiyama is one of the main Zen Buddhism temples in Japan and is ranked number one of the so called “Kyoto’s Five Mountains”. The temple was built between 1339-45 and had a direct connection to Emperor at the time. It’s renowned for its beautiful garden, Sogenchi Pond, and portraits of Musō Soseki, a Buddhist monk and calligraphies from mid 1300s. The temple complex is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
