Japan/Honshu: Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is the most beautiful castle in Japan, without a doubt. The castle is known as the White Heron Castle and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The castle is truly stunning! The castle dates back to 1333 AD, and then enhanced and expanded significantly 16-17th centuries. It is considered to be the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture, featuring a complex network of paths, gates, and defensive structures designed to thwart attackers. The castle complex includes multiple baileys, the main keep, and towers. The white plastered walls not only served an aesthetic purpose but also functioned as a protective layer, helping to fireproof the castle. The castle, surrounded by moat and standing on high ground, has 83 rooms – storehouses, gates, corridors, and turrets. It is the largest castle in Japan.v
