Japan: Manhole Covers in Japan

Apparently, manhole covers in Japan asleep some sort of a cult collectors item – many cities have them all different and colorful and often with Pokémon characters. What started as a scheme to get taxpayers on board with pricey rural sewer projects in the 1980s has grown into a countrywide tourist attraction and a matter of civic pride. Every city and town now design and tout their attraction on the municipal manhole covers, often with ultra elaborate designs and bright colors.
