Japan/Shikoku: Exploring Shikoku Island by Train

We spend a day exploring the Shikoku Island by train, departing from Okayama and making it to the largest town and capital of Shikoku – Matsuyama. Shikoku is the smallest and often overlooked of the main four Japanese islands – only 225 km by 150 km and with under 4 million people on population. The island is very mountainous in the middle and the mountains rise steeply from the Seto Island Sea that separates Shikoku and Honshu. No bullet trains here – just a regular old school with big panoramic windows to enjoy the green scenery of mountains and rice fields. The island is connected to its larger neighbor by long state-of-the-bridges. Shikoku is also famous for the 88 temple Buddhist pilgrimage – pilgrims visiting in foot 88 small Buddhist temples tucked away in the mountains.
