Japan: Tokyo – Imperial Palace

The Tokyo Imperial Palace is the primary residence of the Japanese emperor. The current palace was built on the site of an ancient Udo castle and is now comprised a series of buildings and a large sprawling park. Edo Castle used to be the seat of the Tokugawa Shogun that ruled Japan in 1603-1867. In 1868 the shogunate was overthrown, and the country’s capital and imperial residence were moved to Tokyo from Kyoto. In 1888, the construction of a new Imperial Palace was completed. The palace was once destroyed during WWII and rebuilt in the same style, afterwards.
