Japan: Tokyo – Senso-ji Temple
Senso-ji Temple n Asakusa is Tokyo’s oldest temple, dating back to 628 AD. Legend has it that two fishermen discovered a golden statuette of Kannon, the goddess of mercy, in the Sumida River and this discovery led to the construction of Senso-ji Temple. The entrance gate, named Kaminarimon, is adorned with a massive red lantern and marks the start of Nakamise-dori, a broad street leading to the temple. Next is the Hozomon gate, which houses massive wooden statues of deities. The main hall, or Hondo, enshrines the golden Kannon statuette. The temple attracts millions of visitors annually and gets quite crowded.
