Japan: Tokyo – Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building

Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in the Shinjuku District is a 48-story double tour offering awesome panoramic observation platforms on the 45th floor – a good first orientation introduction to Tokyo. The structure was designed by the Japanese architect Kenzo Tange and built in 1991 and was the tallest in Japan for the first three years after construction. At the time, it looked very modernist and futuristic. The buildings’ tenant is the Japanese government for the city of Tokyo. The entrance is free, and there is a priceless piano by Yayoi Kusama, one of the most famous avant-garde artist in Japan for the last half a century.
