Jeju Island: Climbing Sunrise Peak
Seongsan Ilchulbong aka Sunrise Peak is by far the largest and main attraction on Jeju Island and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In fact, it was voted as one of the 7 Wonders of Natural World (which I don’t agree with – how can you allow people who have never seen most of the natural wonders vote on what’s best?). Nevertheless, it’s a geological wonder – it’s a tuff cone that formed when a volcano erupted underwater (not a common event), it’s 182m high above the ocean and has a perfect round crater on top. Interestingly, out of 220 plant species found in the crater, 6 are endemic and found nowhere else. It’s a steep but relatively quick climb onto the top – about an hour. As usual, most Korean tourists are busy taking selfies of themselves rather then the actual natural wonder…
