Kamchatka (Russia): Eating Fresh Sea Urchins in Avachinskiy Bay
At one point during the boat cruise in the Avachinsky Bay, one of the sailors dons a wet suit and dives into the chilly waters coming out with a bag full of giant sea urchins. In Japan, these spiky animals sell for $20-$30 each, valued as delicacy of the sea urchin roe or “uni”. (Technically, the yellow edible innards is not roe but gonads aka reproductive organs and tissue). Nobody on the boat knew what these were, so I had a feast of over a dozen of them.
