Kamchatka (Russia): Kurilskoye Lake – Bears & Cubs
Kurilskoye Lake in the south of Kamachatka is one of the best places in the world to observe the brown bears. The sockeye salmon spawn here from late spring until early fall and huge Kamchatka brown bears patrol the shoreline, devouring tons of fish pretty much non-stop through the summer. There are many different places to watch bears, and if you come in August, you may see plenty of couple-months’ old bear cubs still feeding on mother’s milk. One of the female bears has 4 cubs, which is a rarity for brown bears and only happens in good years with abundant food supply.
