Kenya: Lake Baringo – Rothschild’s Giraffes on Giraffe Island
Rothschild’s Giraffe is by far the most endangered and rare giraffe species with only a few hundred left in the wild. It’s also known as Baringo Giraffe for the Lake Baringo where it lives. There is an island in the middle of the lake that has 8 giraffes on it, it’s called Giraffe Island and is a reserve entirely for the protection of the species. Rangers monitor th all the time and I got a chance to actually walk the island and see giraffes within just feet as they were fed food supplements. The Rothschild’s giraffe is very distinct in color patterns from both the Maasai and Reticulated giraffe species, additionally it has no markings on legs, so it looks like wearing white stockings.
