Latvia: Riga – Old Town
Riga old town (aka Vecriga in Latvian) has a well-preserved medieval town center with cobblestone streets, gothic and baroque buildings, art nouveau decorations, and many churches and cathedrals (St Peters and Riga Dome being the two most famous landmarks). The town is closed to car traffic and is a virtual maze of narrow twisting streets, packed with tourists and open air bars and restaurants. Just outside the old town are broad avenues with monuments and more churches, and famous Riga trams are everywhere. The entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It doesn’t take long to explore the entire old town, unless you get lost, or stop to sample Riga Balzam.
