Liberia: Monrovia – JJ Roberts Monument
JJ Roberts was the first (and also 7th) president of Liberia. He was born free in Norfolk in Virginia, USA and emigrated to Liberia as a young man. He became the leader of the roughly 4000 Americans who came to the country to establish a first republic in Africa. The efforts of Americans were not welcomed by locals as well as colonial superpowers. The American legacy pretty much drowned during the ruthless civil wars and rule of Taylor but is now recovering. The monument is in the heart of town and has 360 views of the city (coincidentally it’s one of the few places deemed safe).
