Libya: Gharyan – Pottery Market
Gharyan, located about 90km south of Tripoli in the Nafusa Mountains, is famous for its pottery tradition passed since the prehistoric times and is really the pottery capital of Libya! Along the road there are hundreds of stalls with colorful clay plates, pans, and vessels. These pieces are known for their intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and geometric shapes motifs, animal prints and floral designs, The craft tradition here dates back to the Neolithic era (around 6000 BC), with early vessels featuring simple geometric patterns. Artisans source local clay, purify and knead it, then shape it using hand-building or wheel-throwing techniques. After shaping, the pottery is fired, decorated with natural pigment paints, and often glazed for durability.
