Madagascar: Andasibe-Mantadia NP – Common Brown Lemurs

 The first and most ubiquitous lemurs we encountered were the common brown lemurs aka “true lemurs”. These are the most common in Andasibe and you can spot them inside and outside the actual park. They are highly social and live in groups ranging from 5 to 15 individuals. Unlike other lemur species that are either diurnal )active during day) or nocturnal (active at night), these guys are cathemeral – active both day and night – and their activity pattern is flexible and often influenced by the availability of food. Brown lemurs have soft, thick fur ranging from grayish-brown to reddish-brown. Adults typically weigh about 2–3 kg (4.4–6.6 lbs) and are about 40–50 cm (16–20 inches) long, excluding their tails, which are as long or longer than their bodies. They are quite inquisitive and often almost aggressive in search of food and interaction with other lemur species.
