Madagascar: Andasibe-Mantadia NP – Indri Lemurs

These lemurs are the main attraction in the Andasibe-Mamtadia NP and are an absolute must-see – these are the largest lemur species in Madagascar, most iconic and unique. Indri adults reach up to 90 cm (3 feet) in height and weigh 6-9 kg (13-20 lbs). Despite their size, it moves gracefully through the trees with powerful leaps – capable of leaping up to 10 meters (33 feet) between trees – while on the ground they are knowing as “dancing lemurs”. Unlike most lemurs, the indri have no visible tail, which is unusual for a tree-dwelling primate. The indri is famous for their loud, shrieking calls, which can be heard up to 3 km (1.8 miles) away. These sounds help them communicate with family members and mark their territory. Indris are primarily folivorous, feeding on leaves, flowers, and fruits. Indris form monogamous pairs for life! They are found only in the eastern forests on the island and are critically endangered. In Malagasy culture, the indri is often regarded as sacred or connected to ancestral spirits. Its local name, babakoto, translates to “ancestor of man.”
