Madagascar: Flora and fauna of Ankarana National Park
Besides surreal Tsingy (limestone pinnacles) formations, this park is bizarre and outlandish in every respect. Plants have to cope with desert-like conditions for half the year and then floods for another half – bizarre succulents and fat trunk water filled liana trees (strangest plants I have ever seen) are all around here. Lemurs abound – beautiful crown lemurs (for the markings on their heads), Sanford brown lemurs, and nocturnal Sportive lemurs (they lack eyelids and sleep with open eyes). Beetles that camouflage themselves and white bugs with feathers. Hummingbirds, boa snakes, bats, wild pigs. Orchids! And finally trees are patterned to the most incredible colors and shapes.
