Madagascar: Vakona Reserve – Crocodiles
The Vakona Reserve is also home to a crocodile farm, located near Lemur Island. The crocs are not native to Madagascar and were brought here from Africa – these are Nile crocodiles. There are 43 crocs here, lounging around a lake, some of them are super massive. Interestingly, the climate here is too cold for their eggs to hatch. Madagascar once had a native crocodile species, the now-extinct Madagascar dwarf crocodile (Voay robustus), which lived thousands of years ago and likely went extinct due to a combination of habitat loss, human activity, and competition with other species.
