Malawi: Majete NP – Lions
Majete Reserve is the only national park in the country to have all Big Five – elephants, buffalo, rhinos, leopard, and of course lions. Lions were reintroduced to Majete in 2012 after they were wiped out due to hunting and habitat loss decades earlier. The reserve turned out ideal for reintroduction with abundant prey, including antelopes, zebras, and buffaloes. We saw a group of three lions during the sunrise drive – all sleeping right in the road – two females and a young adolescent male – still quite active in cooler morning temperatures.
