Malaysia: Malacca – Exploring the Historic Center
Malacca City aka Melaka is officially known as the Historic City of Malacca, is the capital of the Malacca state and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Malacca was a major trading center in the ancient Indochina – connecting the Middle East and China and Indonesian islands, and was one of the oldest cities founded on the peninsula. The Portuguese came in the 16th century, determined to dominate the trade. British domination came in the 19th century. The historic city center is at the Dutch Square with the red-colored Christ Church and the Stadhyus, St Paul’s Church, A Famosa Fort (both in the next post), Malacca Sultanate Palace Museum, Independence Memorial (Malaysian independence was proclaimed in Malacca), Taming Sari Tower, Navy Museum with several ships on display, and plenty of historical houses and structure along the Malacca River cutting through the city.
