Malaysia: Penang – Exploring George Town
The Penang island just off the coast of northern Malaysia in the Straits of Malacca was chosen by the British as their settlement in 1786 and the main port and trading post for the East India company. George Town was the main city in the island and grew rapidly. In 1826, Penang, together with Malacca and Singapore, were incorporated as a single British Crown colony with George Town the capital of the three. George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a compact city full of historical attractions – narrow streets with Chinese temples, Hindu temples, Christian churches, and Muslim mosques. The town also has a lot of wall art everywhere and a total obsession with drawing cats. Easy and pleasant to roam around at any time of the day or night.
