Malaysia: Penang – Penang Hill
The highest point on the Penang Island is known as Penang Hill – 833 m (2,733 ft). To get here for a bird’s eye view of the island and the city of George Town and the entire island’s coastline one need to take the Penang Hill Railway – a steep funicular whisking you up to the top. Originally built in 1923, the funicular system was modernized in 2010 and now goes through a tunnel – the steepest funicular tunnel in the world! The total track is nearly 2km long. Once on the top, you are treated to many super breathtaking panoramic views. Also at the very top are several cafes and restaurants, canopy walks, as well as a Hindu temple and a Muslim Mosque. But most importantly – it’s all a spectacular rainforest, and part of the UNESCO Biosphere reserve.
