Malaysia: Proboscis Monkey
Proboscis Monkeys are endemic to Borneo where the live side by side with the more famous orangutan. Proboscis monkeys are the largest monkey species in Asia, up to 50 lb in weight. They are easily identifies by a massive nose on males that can reach up to 10 cm (4.0 in) in length. The nose serves no apparent reason except that females seek the males with the largest noses to mate with (surprise!). The bigger the nose on a male, the larger harem he gets. Despite looking fat and slow, they are amazing climbers and even better jumpers as they can clear the area over rivers in one long jump. They move in groups of 20-50 and just fly from tree to tree. The males have also very interesting fur – a brown jacket over a white under color – look like old grandpa on a cold winter.
