Marquesas/Nuku Hiva: Vaipo Waterfall
At the end of the Hakaui Valley is the crown jewel of the hike – the Vaipo Waterfall, the highest in the Marquesas Islands. Dropping a staggering 350m/1000ft from the saber-toothed mountains surrounding the valley. The hike close to the waterfall is not allowed as a single dropping stone here (and there are many) would be deadly. It’s an awe-insuring sight standing at the foot of the waterfall and gazing up the a thousand-door drop of water. But you can’t stand long – mosquitoes attacking and jumbo-sized foot-long crayfish biting your toes in the river stream.
