Marquesas/Tahuata: Around the Island
And one more island in the Marquesas archipelago – Tahuata. Tahuata is a sister island of Hiva Oa, located just 4km away across a very rough straight of water navigating which is only possibly about 20% of the time. Tahuata means “sunrise” in Marquesan language as the island is easternmost in the archipelago. As such, it was this island that captain Cook landed on in 1774. The island has less then 2000 residents and is rather rustic and undeveloped but it has an amazing church (next post), beautiful bays, and perhaps the best beach in Marquesas – a great place for a freshly prepared poisson cru (fish with coconut milk).
