Marshall Islands/Majurol: Majuro – BoB Distillery
For something totally unusual, you should sample a locally distilled spirit – BoB Whiskey – made from pandanus fruits (Bōb is the Marshallese word for the pandanus plant). In Marshallese culture, the bōb tree is essential – the pulp is made into a preserved paste called jāānkun. Pandanus that grows on Marshall Islands reaches massive sizes, unlike on any other islands. Because pandanus is naturally high in sugar and Vitamin A, it creates a distinct flavor profile that is unlike traditional grain whiskeys. It is aged in oak barrels, it has a somewhat sharp and yet sweet taste, different from other whiskeys or bourbons. And when it comes to uniqueness – this is as unusual and rare of a drink as it gets. The distillery is not open for tours but we got super lucky to be invited by the owner!
