Marshall Islands: Marshallese Food Recap
It was basically an all-tune diet on Marshall Islands – freshest and yummiest fish! And there is a reason for all the tune – Majuro’s has a reputation as the “Tuna Capital of the World” – because of its massive protected lagoon and strategic location in the Central Pacific, Majuro serves as the primary stop and dispatch center for the world’s tuna supply with many ships coming here with their tuna catch and reloading it into freezers. The truly local dish is the Marshallese Poke – freshly caught tuna mixed with soy, lime, and a bit of coconut milk. Sashimi style tuna is awesome as well, as is the seared tuna. We also had tuna in soup, grilled, and fish’n’chips forms. And then some more poke! And to follow it up with pandanus whiskey and fresh pandanus juice!
