Martinique: Chateau Dubuc

One of the main attractions on the Caravelle Peninsula is Château Dubuc, a historic sugar plantation dating back to the 17th century. Originally established by French settlers, it was one of many sugar plantations that fueled the island’s economy during the height of the sugar trade. The plantation was named after the Dubuc family, who were prominent landowners and sugar producers in Martinique. Like many sugar plantations in the Caribbean, Château Dubuc relied heavily on enslaved labor to cultivate sugarcane and process sugar. The plantation thrived for several centuries, contributing to Martinique’s status as a key player in the global sugar trade. However, with the abolition of slavery in the 19th century and changes in agricultural practices, Château Dubuc, like many other plantations, declined in importance. Today, one can explore the ruins of Château Dubuc with beautiful nature and lots of birdlife around.
