Martinique: Fort-de-France – Schoelcher Library
Schoelcher Library was built in Paris in the late 19th century by the architect Henri Picq for the Universal Exhibition of 1889, and later shipped to Martinique and reassembled in Fort-de-France. The library is renowned for its stunning neoclassical architecture, featuring intricate ironwork designed by Gustave Eiffel himself. The Schoelcher Library houses a vast collection of books, manuscripts, and documents, including rare works, specializing in Caribbean history and culture. The library is named after Victor Schoelcher, a French abolitionist who played a key role in the abolition of slavery in France’s overseas territories in 1848.
