Martinique: JM Rhum Distillery
Only Martinique rum can have the prestigious AOC designation (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée), to be truly considered an authentic rhum agricole (sugarcane rum). Martinique has 9 distilleries producing rum and JM is one of the oldest, dating back to 1790. Besides touring the distillery at your own pace, you can sample as much rum as you want, and generous portions as well. So I opted for ages dark rums (3yr, 4yr, 6yr, 10yr, 15yr) – probably best rum I ever had (the previous best rum was from Jamaica). The distillery is located in the foothills of Mount Pele, an active volcano.
