Martinique: Memorial Cap 110 at Anse Caffard
Just east of the village of La Diamant at the Anse Caffard is a solemn memorial called Memorial Cap 110., paying tribute to the victims of the transatlantic slave trade in Martinique. It was right in this place that in 1830, a ship carrying nearly 300 slaves from Africa in squalid conditions hit the coastal rocks and sank. 214 people died, while 86 survived. Officially, slave trade was already banned by then, so most of the slaves were chained to the bottom of the ship and smuggled illegally. Most man died, while the survivors were mostly women and children. The memorial retells the tragic story and the broader history and includes 15 tightly-packed statues made from white sand-stone, facing the ocean.
