Martinique: Mount Pele

The landscape of Martinique is dominated by an active volcano, Mount Pele, in the north of the island. This 4,583 feet conical stratovolcano erupted violently in 1902 (see next post), and again less dramatically in 1932. Its volcanic cone is composed of layers upon layers of solidified lava and ash. The volcano is still considered active, but it’s now strenuously monitored for any signs of reawakening. In 2023, the volcano and the area around it were names a UNESCO World Heritage site. You can drive up pretty close to the looming top and see it usually clad in clouds with panoramic views of Martinique in other directions.
