Martinique: Trois Rivieres Distillery

he rum distillery touring of Martinique continues (since it’s usually unlimited free tasting including old rum – so why not?). One more distillery we visited was the Trois Rivieres Distillery in the middle of the island. The distillery has a rich history dating back to 1660 when Nicolas Fouquet, minister of Louis XIV, invested in the plantation located in Sainte-Luce. Until the 19th century, the estate was specialized in the production of sugar cane. It was only in 1940 that Trois Rivières devoted its activity exclusively to the production of rum agricole. It has since become one of Martinique’s most iconic rum producers. Trois Rivières Distillery follows traditional methods of rum production, including harvesting sugarcane by hand and using copper pot stills for distillation. The result is a range of award-winning rums known for their quality and unique flavor profiles. The rums produced here carry AOC label. One of the interesting rums you can try here is the one that uses sea water for distillation (it probably has zero effect on the distilled spirit, but the gimmick is catchy).
