Mauritius: Seven Colored Earths
An incredible geological wonder of the world is on display in Mauritius near the town of Chamarel – a plain of brightly colored semi-petrified sand dunes with seven distinct colors – red, violet, brown, green, blue, purple, and yellow. These dunes are the result of volcanic soils rich in iron and aluminum resulting from lava cooling at different temperatures and hence having different coloration. Whatever the reason – it’s a truly spectacular and surreal site that is more likely to be on Mars than on Earth.
