Melilla: Melilla la Vieja
Melilla is a tiny enclave surrounded by Morocco on all sides and the sea on the north. A peninsula jutting out into the Mediterranean is a heavily fortified old town known as Melilla la Vieja. It’s a massive fortress on a high ground surrounded by multiple layers of defensive walls, towers, and internal enclosures. In fact, this was the entire city of Melilla within these fortress walls in the 17-18th centuries. You can walk the perimeter beneath the walls, as well as get up on top and walk along the rim to the far end with a beautiful lighthouse and some sweeping vistas. Several museums are located within the old city as well as government offices and residences. The fortress is absolutely spectacular, fully restored and you can see for miles in all directions, including into Morocco.
