Menorca: Mahon – Iglesia del Carmen & Iglesia de Santa Maria

These pair of churches dominate the skyline of Mahon – Iglesia del Carmen & Iglesia de Santa María. The former is the largest religious building in the city, dedicated to the Virgin of Carmen (Mare de Déu del Carme), the patron saint of sailors and fishermen. The Church was built by the Carmelites in the mid 1700s in a neoclassical style with an austere facade and a grand interior with a massive dome. The other church, Iglesia de Santa María, is situated right in the heart of the historic center on Plaça de la Constitució, opposite the Town Hall, and is often viewed as the symbol of the city. It dates back to 13th century and was originally gothic, but was later rebuilt by the British in 1742 into its present day neoclassical appearance. Again – grand interior, this one is very intricate and full of religious art. The star item here is its pipe organ, one of the largest in Europe!
