Mexico/Baja Sur: Punta Abreojos
It’s not enough to just hit the whale watching spots in Baja – true exploration requires going to places way off the beaten path. One such place was a god-forgotten tiny fishing village of Punto Abreojos on the desolate western coast of central Baja. The road there runs through equally desolate volcanic landscape full of cacti and agave. Eventually you make it to the windswept shore of this tiny town – just a fishing village with a single church, single tiny cafe, and a lot of fishermen. Abreojos means “open your eyes”, and refers to the treacherous sailing conditions, with many rocks and reefs around town, in fact there are plenty of wrecks in the waters around.
