Mexico/Jalisco: Guadalajara – Instituto Cultural de Cabañas
Instituto Cultural de Cabañas in Guadalajara is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It’s a former hospital and orphanage, founded and built at the end of the 18th century. It is one of the largest and oldest hospitals in the Americas. The massive rectangular building is based on the design of the Les Invalides in Paris, with a spectacular and massive chapel in the middle. The side buildings hold different modern art galleries while the main chapel has a stunning fresco-covered dome with 57 magnificent frescoes painted by José Clemente Orozco – your neck will hurt from staring at them. The large square in front of the Cabanas is also stunning – with a lot of weird and fairy-tale structures and monuments.
