Mexico/Puebla: Puebla – Puebla Cathedral
The Cathedral of Puebla (Basílica Catedral Metropolitana de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción) is world famous and one of the grandest churches in Mexico. Construction began in 1575 and dragged on for over a hundred years until 1690 with multiple design changes and rebuilds along the way, resulting in a mix of baroque, neoclassical, and renaissance styles. The from and two towers were built out of black limestone and the towers were the tallest structures in Mexico. Bells were placed only in one of the towers, since then other one could have collapsed under the bell weight since an underground river ran underneath it. The lavish baroque interior has 14 lateral altars filled with artistic masterpieces and the main altar that is just beyond impressive. Puebla Cathedral is located in the heart of the city bordering the Zócalo central square.
