Mexico/San Luis Potosí: San Luis Potosí
San Luis Potosi is the largest by population in Mexico and its capital is the city of San Luis Potosí. Founded in 1592, it quickly grew rich on abundant gold and silver mining and became one of the most prosperous towns with lavish colonial architecture and magnificent cathedrals. In the very center lies Plaza de Armas (seemingly same design in every single colonial town in then former Spanish empire) with the massive Catedral Potosiana facing it and the Palacio Municipal adjoining it. Another big square in fronted by El Carmel Church and the Teatro de La Paz and the Museum of Masks (closed). Several smaller squares with yet more churches scattered around – San Juan de Dios, San Augustin, etc. And lying at over 6000 feet in elevation, San Luis Potosí gets really cold at night, so don’t venture out in shorts in the evening.
