Mongolia: Freak Snowstorm in Gobi Desert
This was just insane – after a nice sunny day with temps in 20c/70f range – a freak storm dropped on the Gobi desert – with winds and rain pummeling the yurt that I was afraid it would collapse. The temps dropped to freezing. Then I opened the door in the morning – and it’s a half foot of snow! In the Gobi desert! So it was navigating the terrain without any roads to get to highway about 50km west of the camp (got lost 4 times), thanks to herders showing the way. The wildlife came out after the storm in droves – massive herds of wild gazelles running across the white landscape, eagles and vultures flying everywhere, and camels caravaning across the snow.
