Mongolia: Gobi Desert – Driving Across the Gobi Desert
The Gobi Desert is a vast dry area in the south of Mongolia, formed in the shadow of the Himalayas that block most of the rain from the Indian Ocean. Gobi has massive sand dunes (more on them in later posts), several mountain ranges, and endless areas of rocky dry emptiness. Some nomadic families live here, farming camels (there are over 250 thousand camels roaming the Gobi). There are no roads, just dirt tracks, or you can pretty much drive anywhere as far as the eye can see (and gasoline can take you).
