Mongolia: Kharkhorin
Karkhoryn (or Karakorum) was the ancient and first capital of the Mongolian empire, before moving east to Ulaanbaatar. Today it’s a small town nestled in a valley below high hills. There is a large monument on top of one of the hills with a panoramic view of the town below. The circular monument consists of three curved walls depicting the maps of the vast spread of the Mongol empire at various times it its history (all significantly larger then the present day Mongolia).
