Morocco: Ancient Volubilis

Volubilis is one of the best preserved Roman towns in the North Africa – a vast city with triumphal arches, columned avenues, bathhouses and rich living quarters with extensive mosaic-decorated floors. The town prospered in the 1st century BC and was a major agricultural center of olive growing – in fact even today the olive grows spread almost to horizon in all direction around Volubilis. The city was the capital of the ancient Mauretania, a vassal state of the Roman Empire, with most construction and palaces built by King Juba (who was married to Cleopatra Selene, daughter of Cleopatra and Mark Anthony).
