Morocco: Essaouira – Exploring the City
The city’s strategic location made it a crucial point of interest for various civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans, before becoming a prominent hub for trade between Europe and Africa in the 18th century. The French architect Theodore Cornut designed the current layout of Essaouira under the reign of Sultan Sidi Mohammed ben Abdallah – a walled city sitting on cliffs. The fortified walls with ramparts, multiple bastions, several mosques, and many unique traditional building with small windows, blue doors, and whitewashed exterior – all begs for aimless roaming around and exploration. The city is also a neverending market of arts and crafts.
