Morocco: Fes – city walls and towers

Fes is truly amazing – lying in a valley between high hills on both sides and surrounded by over 20km of ancient city walls and fortifications – spectacular panoramic views abound. Outside the compact medina, there is a Royal palace, multiple ornate city gates, and two towers standing on the hilltops opposite each other. The medina enclosed with these sprawling city walls is the world’s largest car-free urban area. Fes is known alternatively as the Athens of Africa or Mecca of Africa, but I think it’s neither and is absolutely unique as Fes. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage site.
