Mozambique: Maputo – Exploring Historic Center

The central area of Maputo is known as Baixa or downtown is the old colonial center of the city with a planned grid of square blocks and wide, tree-lined avenues interspersed with many large squares. Lots of colonial architecture – neoclassical and art deco – like the Maputo Cathedral, City Hall, Post Office, Scala Cinema, and many administrative or commercial buildings. Some brutalist socialism monuments like the statue on Worker’s Square, some super modern glass and iron skyscrapers, and several streets with very colorful street art. And of course a must see is the waterfront Marginal and Costa do Sol areas with open, breezy promenades with ocean views, best for sunset!
