Mozambique: Maputo – Fortaleza de Maputo

The historic Fortaleza de Maputo is a a Portuguese-built colonial fortress from 1782 it was built to protect the trading post of Lourenço Marques (Maputo’s former name). It endured attacks from local chiefdoms in 1785, French corsairs in 1796, and several others. It’s a relatively small red-stone fortification single gate leading to a central courtyard with a couple monuments. You can climb and walk on top of the wall and see a lot of cannons and enjoy some good views of downtown Maputo.
